Worlds of GM Gene

Sagas of Ae’oh

Ae’oh is a fantasy universe decades in the making.  First composed on loose-leaf college ruled paper in the spare minutes before and after a high-school lunch and sometimes during classes.  The first stories in Ae’oh played out in Soul Calibur 3 as custom fighters battled and ultimately determined conflict outcomes.

The known physical world is contained to a singular crescent-shaped continent.  Many cultures call this realm various names in their native tongue, but most prefer Ae’oh or The Crest.

Ultimately, Ae’oh is a melting pot of cultures, peoples, and stories inspired by a wide breadth of current and historical civilizations.  Adding to this, the creative influences of art, literature, and music have left their mark on Ae’oh and the worlds connected to it.

R.E.A.L.M.

A feat of electrical and social engineering, The Radiotelemetry Experience Aggregate and Living Macroworld, or Realm, is a worldwide network of interconnected servers and clients accessed by a digital neurologic wave hijacker. In essence, users live multiple lives outside of their physical one.

This system includes digital spaces for every aspect of life, including clerical and business, educational academies, and medical services.  Arts and entertainment are the most notable, with the most prominent providers offering their own unique experiences curated and hosted to the greatest delight of their shareholders.

Until recently, Realm as a whole has been a stable service with little to no interruption or downtime until a significant outage affected the world for several days.  During this time, the most influential data companies were at odds over who shouldered the most blame.  But eventually, the servers came back online; and with something new.

Shortly after the first users began coming back online, they made first contact with artificial intelligence creatures who would become known as Advai, shortened for advanced AI.  For the first time since its creation, Realm fell into chaos.  Shortly after what would be known as The Reboot, many users became hospitalized with neurological conditions caused by unknown means.  Many experts blame the Advai, with a significant portion of the population appearing to mutate into horrors from their original avatar forms.

Realm faced a significant crossroad, and to avoid liability, many servers elected to shut down until the problem had subsided.  At the same time, a large number of Advai, which differed from their beastlike kin, stood against the destructive culling.  They undertook missions to back up data and protect as many users as possible as they retreated across the Realm network.  Several days after the servers began to shut themselves down voluntarily, the Advai held defenses at 5 data centers that had refused to shut down a second time and closely monitored Advai activity.

Engineers and scholars debated at length the ethics of committing genocide against these digital lifeforms or even if they were sentient beings at all.  Luckily, for the Advai which mitigated even greater damage occurring to digital data and physical beings, they could hold back and eventually defeat their corrupted brethren.  This historic event cemented itself as the dawn of biological and digital beings living in coexistence.

Slowly, servers would come back online, but Realm would not be the same as before, with the five great data centers remaining the largest and most powerful entities controlling the Realm.
